The existing nursery has a rigid structure of trees. This is a perfect basis for an exhibition area of tree species and plants. The design introduces a clear main structure for the nursery with additional functions in the north and the south part of the nursery.
By adding more tree species in the nursery which have a special autumn color, are evergreen or have special flowers in spring, the project aims to bring more color in the city of Beijing. The plant species in the Tianzhu Nursery will be an example for other projects in the city and will bring color highlights in all the seasons.
The second goal is to bring a clear main structure and to improve access for visitors. A main route provides clear routing and organization of the nursery. While following the main route, visitors will see all highlights of the nursery.
Various special gardens, patios, axis and vertical gardens create highlights in the nursery. It becomes a real showcase of colorful gardens and a source of inspiration for parks, streets, office gardens and private gardens. At the ‘Tian Abstract’ a pattern of plants, hedges, terraces and paths creates the ‘tian grid’, which is used to show the diversity of plant species. The walls and roof of the existing building could be removed to create a patio garden in and transform this building into a museum.
A sophisticated water system collects the rainwater from the roof of the buildings and runs through small canals towards the natural flower garden at the south, where the water is stored in a natural pond.
