The peninsula that can be found in Yangzhou’s river will be transformed into a colorful flower park. Yangzhou is 2500 years old this year. This calls for a park that reflects the local and worldwide culture that includes Yangzhou. The theme of the park is Marco Polo, the explorer who lived in the city for a few years during his adventures. The theme gardens are based on the silk route that he followed to get there, representing various regions along that route.

NITA Hangzhou has created the overall design and we were asked to give design advice and create a planting plan that is full of flowers during three peak moments during the year. The planting plan consists of four areas: the natural sloped edges along the water, the ornamental flower sea which changes with each theme area / world theme, an eye-catching flower carpet near the entrance and a series of artificial hills full of color.

There is a beautiful contrast between the ecological flower mixes along the natural slopes and the more ornamental flower beds in the middle of the park. The plant species have been chosen so there is always an abundant amount of blooming flowers, especially during the three important vacation periods during the Chinese holidays every year. The combination of perennials, ornamental grasses, summer flowering bulbs and annuals create a unique flower sea which accentuates the diversity of the regions that the silk route travels through.
