The Qinhuai River  is the main river that flows through the city of Nanjing, it is the cultural spine of the city. The city has a strong physical as well as a historical and cultural link with the water. Whereas the city of Nanjing expands, a large part of the Qinhuai River becomes part of the city.

The project area is a quite narrow strip between the built urban area and the river. In places where the project area widens, a number of highlights are planned. The government has launched a competition for this assignment, in which five teams have submitted a plan (EWAD, L & A, Southeast University, Turenscape and NITA / Niek Roozen). The jury chose the plan of our team, NITA / Niek Roozen landscape architects, as the winning design.

Our winning plan is based on the cultural value of the river. There’s a big difference in height between the built area and the water level. In the current situation there is hardly any relation with the river. The design proposes clear and logical connections between the (future) city and the river, using paths, ramps, boardwalks, tea houses and fishing spots. A system of water taxis rehabilitates the strong historical connection to the water and creates a vibrant waterfront.

Along some sections of the river several parks have been constructed. The starting point of the plan is to keep valuable elements in the new design, such as existing trees. By adding a few design interventions, the concept to re-establish the connections with the river can be used over the entire length of the river.

After winning the competition we are now making the detailed design for the first part of the project in close cooperation with NITA Nanjing.
