‘Niek Roozen ltd. landscape architects’ has been selected together with’ Bureau HOSPER landscape architecture and urban planning’ and ‘Goudappel Coffeng ltd.’ for the second round of the Landesgartenschau Kremsmünster 2017 competition.

The small Austrian place is situated between two hills with an existing monastery and a castle, which are the base of the design. Temporary plant beds and perennial borders are outlining the exhibition.

Flower carpets in vivid colours, mixed flowers and natural plant mixes in an orchard show a variety in gardens.

The design exists of two main areas, the first one being the monastery and its gardens. The monastery has been structured with courtyards, an orchard and vegetable gardens. The architecture of its buildings and the present-day use of the gardens have been leading features for the design. The monks use their gardens to be self-supporting and the citizens can buy their local products here. These gardens have become an important part of the plan, based as it is on existing structures and landscape elements. By adding a clear main routing, simple strong gardens, a diversity in plant layers a recognizable and divers design developed.

The second area is situated around the castle. At this moment the castle accommodates a musical society. For this reason  the principal wishes a amphitheatre to be implemented in the plan, so the visitors of the landesgartenschau and later on the citizens of Kremsmünster can attend musical performences  or theatre shows.

In this area our design is inspired by music: music clefs and music signs are making the link.

A carpet of perennials combinations and  the local garden entries  are adding  to this colourful display.

Finally there are two other areas: the border of a river and the central market square. They are connecting the main areas. In the design  the disappeared old redoubt on the river site  has been implemented as a soil body which, together with the natural border of the river, leads to adventurous play of visiting children. By eliminating a road near the market square, the surrounding  for the restaurants and bars becomes more intimate. The four areas become a total design by applying a recognizable routing and planting style. The jury highly appreciated our design and was especially impressed by the solution for the market square, as a link between the areas and as an independent place to stay.
