We have been invited to participate in a contest to make a new design for the Guangzhou Garden. This existing garden is located in the town and is the connection between the city and the famous Baiyun mountain. Due to the southern climate here grow many types of flowers and therefore, Guangzhou is also called the flower city of China. The government wants to strengthen this image with a particular garden.
The current garden was pretty traditional with theme gardens and large flower beds of one sort. More towards the mountains the gardens are more natural. We based our design on this existing situation with beautiful large trees and shrubs as well. Next to the garden design we were also asked to design the roads, routing, greenhouses and the service area. The new metro stations and the road that crosses the area were reason for a 'flowerbrigde' design. In this way the areas linked together and is the ' flowerbrigde ' also a landmark and a way to bridge the differences in altitude.
We designed with this concept a more ecological garden. The buildings are part of the landscape now and have a link with the famous mountain. Green roofs in the service area isolate the exhibition spaces underneath and ensure a pleasant climate in the hot summers. In addition, a new water system is proposed. Also the water from the rooftops and the 'flowerbrigde' are captured and reused. The result is an integrated system of water, mountains and vegetation, whereby also the ecological value of the area will increase. All in all, a diverse garden that gives a new image to the city.
