Niek Roozen Landscape Architects participates in this design competition together with ALLYNITA in Shanghai. Our aim is to explore the cultural and historical characteristics of the city and to integrate them into our riverfront design. This way we want to let people experience the culture and history of the city in different manners.
Our challenge was to create in the existing situation a recognizable and continuous water front base, and to make a realistic plan. Currently there are many narrow strips between the existing urban area and the river. There are also a few parks and random patches of land along the river in different styles and states. In our design we improve these areas and the visual and physical accessibilities to the river.
We designed on both sides of Chuanchang river an uninterrupted foot and bike path all along the banks. Along the path different highlights are presented. There are many nodes on the route which link to tourist sites in the city. We also designed docks and small harbors along the river for boat tours. By boat, visitors can enjoy the view from an alternative perspective, giving them a different experience.
16 bridges yet exist across the river. In our design we incorporated a series of projection art under the bridges, related to the history of the city. When people sail under these bridges, they can read and see parts of the history of the city from these projections.
We also pay attention to the planting design along the river. It should fit into all themes of our concept and function well as a pleasant, green space for the visitors. The existing planting will be improved by adding more colourful plants. This natural and colourful flower ribbon will make the experience of the site more intense and memorable.
