The masterplan for the Wantou New City in Ningbo is a creative combination of the urban requirements of the city, its unique location and the amount of green required for a healthy cityscape. Wantou is a peninsula situated at the point where the Rihu river makes a sharp turn towards the Yongjiang River north of the city center of Ningbo. The urban structure is defined by internal waterways linked to the river and the resulting islands of urban development. Each island is densely built but in such way that there is adequate space left for green. The public open spaces running north-south through the center of the plan have an urban character and serve as the art and cultural axis for the development. The chain of small islands meandering along the central waterway form the green and ecological connection from the city towards the waterfront. The entire development is surrounded by a riverfront park, providing recreational opportunities and bringing the citizens of the city back in contact with the water.
